At the bottom of the mala is the 109th bead , called the sumeru, bindu, stupa, or guru bead. It often symbolizes the guru from whom the disciple received the mala or mantra, thus paying homage to the disciple-guru bond. It is never counted in the repetitions, but is used to mark the beginning and end of the cycle.
